Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until translucent.

Slice the American cheese into quarters. Divide the ground beef mixture into 4 equal portions in the skillet. Top each portion with a slice of cheese and let melt.
Layer the cheese-topped beef on the bottom half of each bun. Add any optional toppings you desire. Top with the other half of the bun.
