Bodega-style Chopped Cheese Recipe

1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1/2 onion, diced 1 pound ground beef Salt and pepper to taste 4 slices American cheese 4 hamburger buns or hero rolls, split Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mayo, pickles

Ingredients

Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until translucent.

Instructions

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper. Cook while breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.

Slice the American cheese into quarters. Divide the ground beef mixture into 4 equal portions in the skillet. Top each portion with a slice of cheese and let melt.

Layer the cheese-topped beef on the bottom half of each bun. Add any optional toppings you desire. Top with the other half of the bun.

Optionally, you can toast the buns in the skillet for 1-2 minutes per side before assembling for a crispy exterior.
